Under the Tree Podcast: A Seminar on Freedom with Bill Ayers.-------------------
The name of our podcast Under the Tree: A Seminar on Freedom draws inspiration and wisdom from the Freedom Schools created during the great uprisings of the 1950s and 1960’s. Those fugitive spaces, were sites where people gathered to organize an insurgency, and in those settings—modern expressions of the centuries-old Black Freedom Movement, rising today in astonishing new ways—to examine the circumstances of their lives, name their political moment, and think freely about a world that could be or should be, but is not yet. We've wanted to do much the same thing. Freedom School participants generated their own questions, and what evolved over time was a curriculum of questions that worked to unlock the “wisdom in the room,” to build agency and empowerment through authentically engaging the real problems people faced in their lives—including structural barriers and obstacles—leading to shared inquiry, and then to collective action.
We've posted 70 episodes so far, and each includes an interview with someone who has thought deeply about freedom, and engaged personally in the freedom struggle, among them: Robin DG Kelley, Barbara Ransby, Mariame Kaba, adrienne maree brown, Erica Meiners, Lisa Lee, David Stovall, Bernardine Dohrn, Kevin Kumashiro, Chesa Boudin, Kathy Boudin, Bill Fletcher, Jr., Timmy Chau, Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, Tongo Eisen-Marin, and Eve Ewing.
